Post-16

Thorn Park School Sixth Form is for Deaf Students aged from 16 – 19. Students can join the Sixth Form for 1, 2 or 3 years depending on their needs and the courses which they are following. We provide a stepping stone between formal education in school and adult life.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, with emphasis on developing the Key Skills of Literacy, numeracy and ICT. We also access local Further Education Colleges, so that the students can explore different vocational areas, so that they can make an informed decision about their future when they leave school.

We also place great emphasis on developing the students’ self-esteem and self-confidence as young Deaf adults. Much emphasis is placed on developing their social skills, so that they are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Courses offered vary from year to year depending on the nature of the needs of the individual students. In recent years we have been flexible enough to offer a combination from the following:

  • A’ Level Art
  • GCSEs
  • CLAIT
  • NVQ
  • GNVQ
  • Certificate of Achievement
  • AEB Numeracy/Literacy

Students are taught in small groups mainly by experienced qualified teachers of the deaf, who teach throughout the Secondary Department They also have the opportunity to work with a range of adults including Deaf Instructors, Communicators/Interpreters and Special Needs Assistants.

Deaf students from local schools can join Thorn Park in the Sixth Form and we also have students from other local Education Authorities , who wish to access our provision.
